Archaeological Ruins
Construction began on Hadrian's Wall during the reign of Emperor Hadrian in 122AD. It stretched 73 miles coast to coast measuring over 9 feet wide and up to 20 feet tall. There are several theories as to why a wall was erected. One thought is that it was to keep the barbarians out and another was to create checkpoints for taxation purposes. The wall now stands just a few feet and has mostly disappeared. I will say no more on the topic of the wall.

Vindolanda
Just south of the wall we visited the Roman fort, Vindolanda, where archaelogists and volunteers are excavating 9 centuries of ancient Roman culture; their discoveries thus far can be found in the museum on site.
Bitter cold. Thank goodness for a warm museum, gift shop and café!
